Horace P. Milton letters, 1863.

A letter written from an encampment at the Metairie Ridge Race Course in New Orleans, dated April 15, 1863, comments in detail on regimental personnel problems and describes the cemetery tombs and the surrounding area. A letter dated May 8, 1863, describes health and weather conditions in New Orleans, the presence of large numbers of "grey-backs" (rebel prisoners who had taken the oath of allegiance), and local excitement at the news of Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson's raid through Mississippi and the reception upon his arrival in New Orleans.
